I have three particular memories of David - who I believe I wasn't the only one who sometimes called him "Beave", for "Beaver" - which were, first, how we would sit in the "Mustang Corral" hanging out and having fun and listening to albums that we and others brought in to be played over the intercom. We probably spent some time out in the smoking area as well - an amenity that I think Pearce does not now have. I myself started smoking at age 15 and quit cold turkey at age 25, after 5 years of 3 packs a day - when you could rudely smoke anywhere, and nobody ever complained, or knew it was rude.
The second memory is when he and I sat together in the field for one day at the "First Texas International Pop Festival" At one point there a gag of an illicit substance came flying through the air and landed on his lap. I can't remember what happened with that, since I doubt we had any papers. Not, of course, that we would have smoked it if we had, since it was not legal to do so.
And then my third specific memory of David is his sister Susan, a very cute girl who - pretty much like every cute girl, then and now, I was in love with - died when she was I think 14, I think of leukemia.
David and I had fun, and so that was cool.
Although, I just remembered, he confessed to me that he was the one who reported to somebody that I had died, so that people were telling my brother that they were sorry. But I forgive him.
Very sorry to hear about my old friend from Pearce. I've been wondering about him for years, and was sorry he never signed up for this web site. He'd come to my house - formerly where Connie Purdy lived, on Salem Dr. - and we'd sit sideways on my bed, leaning against the wall that was there, for me to help him with his math, and all kinds of other fun things. I've also wondered about his girlfriend Karen and her sister Brina.
I happened to be present on that night of teenage shenanigans when David acquired his nickname, "Bird". I'm not sure where the name originated, but it certainly stuck, I guess for the remainder of his high school career. I'm sorry, because I know he hated it. He and I had at least 2 or 3 heart-to-heart talks back then - though about what I can't imagine, other than how he hated his nickname. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. That's too young. In fact, I was pretty shocked to view the pretty long list of deceased class members. I hope Dave will RIP, and my condolences to his family. John Vehon.
